Think Local First!

A Think Local First Campaign to support Havre de Grace businesses kicked off on September 1, 2008. It is a major economic initiative designed to help consumers recognize that supporting locally owned independent businesses keeps up to three times more money recirculating in our local economy; maintains the uniqueness of our city; and creates and maintains jobs. The campaign's initial focus is on retail and service businesses and restaurants.

The campaign was marketed heavily to the Havre de Grace and Harford County communities by the Havre de Grace Office of Tourism. The Think Local First Campaign draws public attention to the benefits of choosing to shop in independent, locally owned businesses and provides an easy way to identify these businesses through a public awareness campaign by utilizing store window decals and in-store displays with a distinctive logo.

The objectives of the campaign are to:

    • Market Havre de Grace as a place to shop
    • Get consumers to spend more dollars with our participating locally owned businesses by promoting unified downtown weekend hours.
    • Support and strengthen locally owned, independent businesses and create and maintain local jobs.
    • Recirculate more dollars in our community to promote a strong local economy

Think Local!  Buy Local!  Be Local!  The City is YOURS!

For further information, please call the Havre de Grace Office of Tourism at 410-939-2100.

The National Trust Shares Tools to Fight Teardowns!

Across the nation a teardown epidemic is wiping out historic neighborhoods one house at a time. As older homes are demolished and replaced with dramatically larger, out-of-scale new structures, the historic character of the existing neighborhood is changed forever. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has compiled its Teardown Tools on the Web to help you fight the epidemic. It highlights approximately 30 tools that are being used by communities around the country in response to teardowns with direct links to more than 300 examples in 32 states. Teardowns on the Web is intended as an easy-to-share, user-friendly, one-stop-shop for people looking for tools to better manage teardowns.
